The park is located in the Dong Thap Muoi region, northwest of the Mekong Delta, with a total area of 7,313 hectares and a population of 30,000.
In 1985, Tram Chim Park was established by the Dong Thap Province People's Committee for Tea Tree Plantation and Nature Conservation. Only nearly 10 years later, in 1994, the Vietnamese state made Tram Chim a national-level Nature Reserve. On May 22, 2012, Tram Chim National Park was recognized as one of the Ramsar sites in the world and the fourth in Vietnam.
The park's Melaleuca plantation covers an area of almost 3,000 hectares with trees of 10 - 20 years of age, creating a wealth of vegetation with over 130 different species. It is also home to more than 250 species of aquatic birds, over 100 species of freshwater fish, and many species of amphibians, reptiles and plankton.

Tram Chim is home to 9 globally threatened bird and 5 fish species, including the endangered Bengal bustard and giant barbel. The site regularly supports more than 20,000 waterbirds in the dry season and over 1% of the population of 6 waterbird species, most notably the sard crane.
The nearby natural landscape of the park plays the role of flood prevention, giving protection to the surrounding area of 20,000 people. The park is a rich source of grass for fodder, trees for fuel, and most importantly, fish, which provides the main source of protein for the local people.
